Madurai Development Authority

The entire Madurai corporation administration is broadly divided into 2 district wings. They are deliberative wing and executive wing. Some decades ago,the deliberative wing had only limited controls over the administration with little powers.But now having democracy as the basis ,The deliberative wing has more powers to control the administration. For example the elected body not only formulates policy to be followed by the administration but also decides appointments ,promotion ,disciplinary appeals etc .,and approve budget and expenditure.Madurai Corporation deliberative wing consists of a Council with all the councilors as Members and 6 standing Committees. The elected council period is 5 years .Each standing committee has one Chairman and 5 members. The members of the Committees are elected by the council by secret ballot. The chairman of the each committee are elected by the members of that committee. The period of the office of the Chairman is one year.

TOWN PLANNING

One of the sectors which attribute to the development of urban areas and the important factor is urban land use development. Unless, it is regulated with regulatory measures the hapazard growth will erupt. With a view to control this the Government have enacted Acts and rules.

Madurai District is situated in the South of Tamil Nadu state. It is bounded on the North by the  districts of Dindigul, Thiruchirapalli and on the East by Sivagangai and on the West by Theni and South by Virudhunagar .

Water Supply in Madurai Corporation

Madurai Corporation meets its water demand through surface and subsurface sources through water supply schemes on Vaigai River.  First protected water supply was provided to Madurai City in the year 1892 through head works at Arappalayam in river vaigai.  The water abstracted from Vaigai River through infiltration galleries was pumped directly into the distribution system.  In 1924 another head works was installed at Kochadai in river vaigai.  The above two head works were balanced as the sand bed over the infiltration galleries were fund thoroughly washed off.

Considering the increasing population and additional demand, head works was installed early in the 1970’s at Melakkal, Thatachampathu and Kochadai Collector well on the Vaigai river bed are utilized to convey water through pumping to the north zone (i.e., North of River Vaigai) during mansoon season and when there is sufficient flow in the river.  Head works at Mannalur and Thiruppuvanam down stream of Madurai City were utilized to pump water to the South Zone (i.e., South of River Vaigai) and are partly functioned depending upon the availability at source.  Pursuant to the design and implementation of the world bank vaigai water supply scheme potable water is now being supplied to the South Zone of Madurai.
