Mysore Urban Development Authority

The City of Mysore owes its rich heritage and good planning to erstwhile City Improvement Trust Board (C.I.T.B.) which was founded by His Highness Sri Nalwadi Krishna Raja Wodeyar - IV and it holds the proud distinction of being the oldest planning institution in Asia. Innovative planning combined with a humanitarian approach has been the hallmark of this City Improvement Trust Board. The present inheritor of the C.I.T.B. is the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) which aspires to carry forward the same high standards set by the C.I.T.B. along with adopting new technology and techniques to take Mysore on a steep growth curve.

The Mysore Urban Development Authority has the onus of developing the city of Mysore in a manner which preserves its diverse heritage and culture, to carry the specific ecology features and to provide the city WorId class infrastructure so that Mysore becomes a centre of Tourism, Education and Industries.

The Government of Karnataka established the Urban Development Authorities for the planned development of major and important urban areas in the State and the area adjacent thereto and to matters connected therewith under the Karnataka Urban Development Authorities Act 1987.  As per the said Act, the City Improvement Trust Board (C. I. T. B), Mysore and Local Planning Authority of Mysore was amalgamated and the present Mysore Urban Development Authority came into existence. The Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) was constituted on 16th May 1988.As per the KUDA Act 1987, the Commissioner of the Authority is the Chief Administrator and Chief Executive of the authority. The Chairman heads the authority. He can call the meeting of the authority and put policy issues before the authority for decision.

The authority has formed many layouts and distributed nearly 35,000 sites and 10,000 houses after it came into existence. Also it has handed over the developed layouts to Mysore City Corporation for further maintenance. Vijayanagara Layout Ist, IInd, IIIrd and IVth Stage, formed by the Authority, is the biggest layout in South Asia, covering an area of nearly 2000 acres having 25,000 sites.

Projects

Outer Ring Road in Mysore City : The City of Mysore is developing at a fast pace, owing to the presence and fresh arrival of number of new industries, educational institutions and also owing to world famous tourist spots in and around the City. On account of the fast development of the city, vehicular traffic has also increased manifold, thereby causing traffic congestion in the city. To decongest the city & to have an easy access to the various new layouts developed by MUDA and to connect major roads of the city to a single arterial road the Mysore Urban Development Authority proposed the Outer Ring Road. Though this proposal was mooted long back, it could not be implemented owing to financial constraints. However, the MUDA with the financial assistance of Asian Development Bank in coordination with Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation has taken up this project and has completed it successfully.
