Kanpur is the 9th most populous city in India and also within the state of Uttar Pradesh.Kanpur is located on the banks of the river Ganga and is an important industrial centre. It has an area of over 1600 km square and had a population of 2.5 million in the 2001 census.Situated on the banks of the River Ganga, Kanpur stands as one of North India’s major industrial centres with its own historical, religious and commercial importance. Believed to be founded by Hindu King Chandel of the state of Sachendi, Kanpur, it is believed that the city derived its name from Kanhiyapur, the town of Kanhiya (Lord Krishna).

The Kanpur Memorial church: Designed by Walter Granville, this church was built in the year 1875, in Gothic style. It is also called All Soul’s Cathedral. Basically it is a war memorial and is housing interesting memorials. The memorial Garden, and beautifully designed gothic screen by Hendry Yule, and in the centre of the screen a beautifully designed figure of an angle by Baren Carlo, Marochetti are the added attractions of this place.

 

Jajmau: It is a historical place in that the excavations of this area have led to the finding of antiquities relating to the period of 600 B.C to 1600 A.D. The high mound in this place is considered to be the fort of the Hindu King Yayati, who is supposed to have ruled this place. The two Hindu temples, Siddhanath and Sidhadevi, the mausoleum of the famous Sufi Saint, Makhdam Shah Al-ul-Haq and a Mosque are the places worth seeing here.

 

Sri Radhakrishna temple: It is a beautifully constructed temple in the contemporary period of the city Kanpur. Considered to be a unique blend of ancient and modern architecture, its mandapas have been constructed with high roof for adequate ventilation of light and air. The temple has five shrines dedicated to the Lords Radhakrishna, Lakshminarayan, Ardhanarishwar, Narmadeshwar and Hanuman. The JK Trust has constructed this temple.

 

Kamla retreat: A museum has been housed here with good collection of historical and archaeological things. It has a zoo and park. Entry to this place is with the prior permission of its Deputy General Manager.

 

Green Park: It is a famous play ground in Kanpur. International cricket matches are played here.

 

Parks and Zoos: There are no of parks in the city of Kanpur. Nana Rao Park, Brijendra Swarup Park and Phool Bagh are some of the parks which attract more tourists. Allen Forest Zoo is one the best zoo in India.

 

Transportation in Kanpur

Kanpur is one of the important cities in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The city is spread over an area of 1040 Sq.Km. The population of the city is about 24 lakhs as per 1991 census.

  • Air: The city of Kanpur has its Airport near Lucknow at Amausi. It is about 65 Km from Kanpur. From Amausi, flights to NewDelhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Patna and Varanasi are available. The Indian Airlines office is situated at Civil Lines opposite to MG College.
  • Rail: Kanpur is well connected by means of Rail to all important cities in India. Kanpur city is in the national Highway No 2 on the Delhi –Agra- Allahabad- Kolkata route and on National High way No 25 on the Lucknow- Jhansi – Shivpuri route.
